CSA Season 2012

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture, generally called "CSA" is a growing new trend in agriculture in which farmers sell directly to consumers, thus forming a unique community and partnership. In a CSA, subscribers help support small regional farms by paying in advance for fresh produce delivered weekly for part of, or the entire duration of, the season. Since CSA members pay at the beginning of the season, they share with the farmer the benefits and risks of farming that result from yearly variations in the weather. Also, by paying in advance it allows your farmers the freedom to focus on producing high quality food.

Why a CSA?

The benefits of participating in a CSA are many. As a member you will not only enjoy all of the food but also a few of the following benefits:

  • Produce grown using organic methods- no pesticides, herbicides or chemicals of any kind.
  • Produce that tastes better because it is straight off the farm and only hours old.
  • Sustainable farming- eating food grown with minimal impact on the environment.
  • Supporting local farming business, which in turn brings more money to local community.
  • Developing a mutual trust and friendship with a farmer.
  • Eating ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits.
  • Convenience - A great selection of produce in one stop.
  • Recipes that will accompany your weekly shares.

In a time of increasingly industrialized food production and the environmental problems that accompany it, wouldn't it be nice to know where your food is coming from? Besides receiving a weekly bag of fresh, high-quality produce, shareholders also know that they're directly supporting a local farm. CSA's allow shareholders to re-establish a connection with the land people feel they have lost.
